About Us

The Full Story

When I first got into taking care of plants, I assumed that the plants you buy from nurseries and big box stores always came in the proper soil according to each individual plant's needs in order to ensure that it reaches it fullest potential. I couldn't have been farther from the truth. After gaining more experience working as a landscape foreman, garden center merchandiser, and finally nursery owner, I've now learned the cold reality of most mass plant retailers and nurseries. The truth is that many "super-growers" use nursery plugs (commonly known as death plugs) and cheap water-retaining soil in order to decrease the amount of time it takes to properly care for the product. Nursery plugs may make it "convenient and easy" for the grower to repot and size up plants, but the long term effect will cause root suffocation for the plant which can result in stress and even death of the foliage, while spongey, water-retaining soil can cause eventual root rot (the #1 most common issue in houseplants). The frustration of buying a plant in a big box store only to watch it die shortly after is a problem faced by many. That's why at Lucero Plants we've made it our mission to make sure that our plants are not only receiving the highest quality of care, we also that ensure each one is always planted in well-draining soil and NEVER planted with death plugs.
